On September 29, the U. S. National Research Council (NRC) released its "Data-Based Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States". The NRC Rankings, last published in 1995, are actually two overall rankings -- with different methodologies -- each calculated as ranges that represent 90 percent confidence limits. The analysis covers 5,000 programs in 62 fields at 212 universities.

Though each ranking is based on slightly different methodologies, both the “R” and “S” rankings place Chemistry at Illinois in the top six programs in the U.S., with the median of the “R” ranking range placing the Department second behind UC Berkeley, tied with Harvard.
