Retreat for Graduate Women in Chemistry

The Retreat for Graduate Women in Chemistry is sponsored by the UIUC Women in Chemistry Program and the ACS Women Chemists Committee of East Central Illinois. The main objectives of the retreat are to welcome and encourage first-year female chemistry graduate students, to provide useful information for graduate students of all years and to establish professional and personal networks within the department. The event takes place in the fall and is open to all female graduate students in the chemistry department, from entering first-year students to those preparing to defend.

Brown Bag Lunch Series

The Women in Chemistry Brown Bag Lunch meetings provide professional development and networking opportunities for women in the Chemistry Department.  Meetings occur four or five times per semester and take the form of a seminar or discussion on topics such as:

  • Career Goal Assessment
  • Balancing Family and Career
  • Scientific Presentations
  • Technical Writing
  • Business Etiquette

Faculty and UIUC alumnae guests have also come to share their career perspectives and experiences. Women graduate students, post-docs and staff within and outside the department have attended this popular forum.

MentorNet

The E-Mentoring Network for diversity in Engineering and Science provides opportunities for women studying science, mathematics or engineering to connect with other women having experience in these fields in the working world. Interested "protégés" fill out a profile and are assigned a mentor with whom to correspond to via email. Additionally, MentorNet has an E-Forum, resources, and a database for resumes of "protégés".
