Chemistry Teaching Option, Chemistry Major in Science and Letters

(Effective for students matriculating Fall 2003)

Students considering this option should consult Gretchen Adams or Don DeCoste about what courses they need to take as the requirements frequently change.

This option prepares students to teach chemistry and general science in secondary schools. To remain in the teaching option a minimum UIUC and cumulative grade point average of 2.5/4.0 is required along with a minimum 2.5/4.0 grade point average in all U of I science and mathematics courses. (chemistry, physics, mathematics, life sciences, geology and astronomy) 1

To declare an interest in teaching high school go to 270 Lincoln Hall and have LAS place a TT designation on your curriculum code. This will place you on a mailing list for education updates or you may contact Phyllis Vanlandingham.

  1. Before applying to the teaching option you must complete (or have in progress):

    Chem 202, 203, 204, 205 (or Chem 102, 103, 104, 105, 222, 223)

    Chem 236, 237 (or Chem 232, 233)

    Math 220, 230

    Edpsy 201 , EPS 201 or 202
  2. During sophomore or junior year, you must apply to Teacher Education between Jan 1 and Feb 1. To apply you need:

    1. complete application (available in 270 Lincoln Hall) and essay
    2. current resume
    3. completed courses in #1 above (or in progress)
    4. to have achieved a passing grade on the Illinois Basic Skills Test

    Chem 236, 237 (or Chem 232, 233) 5-6

    Chem 495 (Teaching Chemistry at the Secondary Level) 3
     
B. Advanced Chemistry Requirements - 8
    At least 5 additional hours of 300-level chemistry/biochemistry (one course must be outside of physical chemistry)  
     
C. Mathematics Requirement 11
    Math 220, 230, 242 (or equivalent)  
     
D. General Sciences

  1. Physics 211, 212, 214
  2. Integrative Biology 101
  3. Geology 101 or 107
  4. Astronomy 100    NOTE: MUST BE TAKEN BEFORE OR WITH PHYSICS 212

E. Nontechnical (General Education)  
  1. Foreign Language: 4 high school years or equivalent (4 college semesters), proficiency of 4th level or 2 languages to the 3rd level
  2. Composition I - choose one sequence: ESL 114 , 115; Rhet 101, 102; Rhet 103, 104; Rhet 105; Rhet 108; SpComm 111, 112
